How to Enjoy your Work Commute

Commuting to work drains an awful lot of your time. According to data published by the U.S. Census Bureau for 2009, the average driver's commute to work takes between 22 and 30.8 minutes, according to whether he or she drives alone. In any case, based on ten trips a week, that's a lot of time to spend in the car. So how can you make that time more enjoyable? Here are some tips from DCH Toyota of Oxnard.

Rock out

Most people have a preferred music taste, and your daily commute is the perfect opportunity to indulge in that taste. Invest in a high-quality audio system, crank up the volume, and enjoy the musical company your favorite sounds can afford. With the added capability of being able to plug your MP3 player or mobile phone into your car stereo, you may even be able to set up a special driving playlist to keep you in the mood.

Keep it clean

Keep your car clean, too. There's nothing worse than commuting in a dirty, cluttered car. Make sure all the trash is removed from the car daily, and don't eat or drink very smelly foods and beverages while you're in it. Treat the car to a regular wash, too, so it's clean and comfortable, and somewhere you enjoy being.

Get in touch

Being stuck in your car for 20 or 30 minutes could be the perfect opportunity to call up your friends, provided you have hands-free capability in your car. If you have other friends commuting at this time, it's the perfect opportunity to share the pain and talk about your day in the office. Talking to somebody on the other end of the phone can make the journey seem far less lonely.

Mix it up

Try varying your commute if possible, too. If you have the flexibility to drive in at a different, quieter time, seize the opportunity. Even if they're longer, try different routes with better views or take you past favorite landmarks. If you have a particularly long commute, you might appreciate a break halfway through. You may find you pass some great spots to stop for a break and a stroll. All these things can take the pain out of a commute.

Ride with friends

Of course, one way to improve your commute is to consider carpooling. This way, you get to share the responsibility of driving, which means sometimes you'll be able to relax, kick off your shoes, and let somebody else take the strain. You may even get away with having a little doze, but failing that you might be on 'pass me the candies' duty, which isn't really a bad place to be.
