Ford Researching Use of Factory Emissions to Make Car Parts

At Lynch Ford Chevroletwe absolutely love cars. But we also understand the strain vehicles can place on the environment. Ford understands that too, which is why the Blue Oval recently announced a revolutionary new initiative that would use factory emissions to make car parts.

According to Bill Ford, the brand’s executive chairman, this latest move sees Ford creating and testing new foam and plastic components using carbon dioxide captured during operations to make seats and interiors.

Currently, up to half of the foam being tested is made up of CO2-based materials. Should Ford prove successful, that waste material could then be used to create various car components, such as seats and engine parts.

Ford researchers foresee the new materials going into production vehicles within five years; future goals include developing other plastic materials using captured carbon to help further reduce the need for fossil fuel-based plastics.

According to the British Plastic Federation, plastic manufacturing accounts for nearly four percent of the world’s oil use. So while tailpipes do emit carbon dioxide, there are sources other than the tailpipe that emit harmful carbon dioxide emissions into the air.

Ford’s aggressive work to lower its environmental impact by reducing its use of petroleum-based plastic and foams could have a massive effect on the environment. According to Ford, using this foam could reduce petroleum use by more than 600 million pounds of oil each year. That’s enough to fill nearly 35,000 American homes.

Of course, Ford is no stranger to developing new ways to preserve the environment. From its powerful and efficient Ecoboost engines to its available hybrid and all-electric models, Ford’s commitment to a greener future is clear, and is one of the many reasons why Lynch Ford Chevrolet is proud to be a part of the Ford family.
