Drive and Handling
The 2020 Equinox offers two engine options that place an emphasis on efficiency without sacrificing performance. Thanks to advances in automotive performance technology, both of these powertrains can get unexpected output from lighter and more efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engines.
The entry-level option is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive layout. In this configuration, the Equinox gets an EPA-rated 28 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 32 mpg highway), while all-wheel-drive models are rated at 26 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway).*
Buyers can also upgrade to the 2.0-liter gasoline engine. The extra half-liter of displacement brings horsepower and lb-ft of torque up to 252 and 260, respectively. The larger engine also comes with General Motors’ new nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard but the available Switchable All-Wheel Drive system allows you to save fuel by switching to front-wheel drive mode when the added traction isn’t needed. This powertrain is the ideal option if you plan to use the Equinox to tow, with a towing capacity of up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
