2015 Chevrolet Silverado

New for 2015

The Silverado was completely redesigned for 2014, and gets a few more notable upgrades for 2015, including a new eight-speed automatic transmission for 6.2-liter V8 models, OnStar 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, an enhanced MyLink infotainment system with Test Messaging Alerts and Siri Eyes Free, and other features.

Full-Size Value

Full-size pickup trucks have to carry both heavy loads and the expectations of demanding buyers. Ford, General Motors, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Nissan, and Toyota know that truck buyers can be some of the most persnickety in the industry, and constantly tweak their trucks to keep up.

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado keeps its bowtie badge ahead of the pack with rugged styling, fuel efficient engines, and the latest technology. With the array of models available, Chevy also makes sure there’s a Silverado for every task, from basic work truck to glitzy luxury vehicle.

Powertrains and Performance

A capable full-size truck needs capable powertrains, and the 2015 Chevy Silverado meets that requirement with three available engines from GM’s EcoTec3 line. These engines perform well, but recent redesigns featured a greater emphasis on fuel efficiency than before.

Base Silverado models comes equipped with a 4.3-liter V6 that produces 285 horsepower and 305 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission and, as with all Silverado models, is available with rear-wheel drive in C15 form and four-wheel drive in K15 models.

With rear-wheel drive the V6 helps the Silverado achieve an EPA-rated 20 mpg combined (18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway),* while the four-wheel drive models get 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city, 22 mpg highway).*

A step up from the base model is the 5.3-liter V8, which produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and also comes with a six-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive models get an EPA-rated 19 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway),* while four-wheel drive models get 18 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 22 mpg highway).*

The top Silverado engine is a 6.2-liter V8 shared with more upscale vehicles like the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Yukon Denali. It boasts 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, as well as a new-for-2015 eight-speed automatic transmission. That, along with the cylinder deactivation system available on all Silverado engines, helps the big V8 achieve a respectable 17 mpg combined (15 mpg city, 21 mpg highway)* with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado is a full-size pickup truck available in Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab configurations with three bed lengths. In addition to the body, buyers can choose from five trim levels starting at $30,110.**

The base Silverado WT is a work truck primarily designed for fleet use, so it does away with anything too fragile or frivolous for a work environment. Standard equipment includes a CornerStep rear bumper, six-gauge instrument cluster, tire pressure monitoring system, audio system with 4.2-inch diagonal screen, cargo area lamps, 17-inch painted steel wheels, and more.

The Silverado LS adds more creature comforts, including heated power-adjustable exterior mirrors, chrome bumpers, Bluetooth, OnStar, power windows, remote keyless entry, and other features.

Incorporating the applicable standard features from WT and LS models, the Silverado LT adds 17-inch bright-machined aluminum wheels, EZ-lift-and-lower tailgate, leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, Driver Information Center, and color-keyed carpeting. A Z71 appearance package is also available on this model.

Further up the trim ladder is the Silverado Z71, which delves into luxury territory with 18-inch aluminum wheels, more chrome trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, and a power-sliding rear window, among other features.

The top Silverado model is the High Country, which boasts all of the standard equipment of the other models, plus standard spray-on bedliner, MyLink infotainment system with navigation, Bose audio system, leather interior, heated and cooled seating, carpeted front and rear floor mats, a floor console, and other model-specific features.

Exterior/Interior

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado has a chiseled exterior that looks like it was created by chipping away at the rugged landscapes you’ll see this truck romping through in Chevy commercials. It’s big and boxy like a child’s drawing of a pickup truck writ large, with lots of chrome parts available to dress it up.

Depending on the trim level, Chevy offers a choice of two-door Regular Cab, or four-door Double Cab and Crew Cab. There are also three available bed lengths.

The interior can be everything from work-truck spartan to luxury-car indulgent, depending on how your truck of choice is equipped. Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system and OnStar 4G LTE with built-in WiFi hotspot add connectivity for either work or play. For 2016, the Silverado also gets Text Messaging Alerts and Siri Eyes Free voice control for iPhone users.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado includes anti-lock brakes, traction control, six airbags, and StabiliTrak stability control with rollover mitigation technology, trailer sway control, and hill-start assist. Optional features include a rearview camera, rear park assist, forward-collision alert, safety-alert seat, and lane-departure warning.

Bottom Line

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado is a competent full-size truck infused with the latest technology and a hint of luxury.
