A New Season For Chevy’s Small SUV

The Chevrolet Equinox has always been a legitimate contender in the small SUV segment. A stylish exterior, the latest tech features, and a capable powertrain lineup all give the Equinox everything it needs to compete in the market, as well as everything buyers should be looking for.

Performance

The 2019 Equinox offers three engine options that place an emphasis on efficiency without sacrificing performance. Thanks to advances in automotive performance technology, all three of these powertrains can get unexpected output from lighter and more efficient turbocharged four-cylinder engines.

The entry-level option is a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, producing 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque. This engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and all Equinox powertrains can be combined with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. With front-wheel drive, the 1.5-liter Equinox gets an EPA-rated 28 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 32 mpg highway), while all-wheel-drive models are rated at 26 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 30 mpg highway).*

Buyers can also upgrade to the 2.0-liter gasoline engine. The extra 0.5 liters of displacement brings horsepower and lb-ft of torque up to 252 and 260, respectively. The larger engine also comes with General Motors’ new nine-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive models are EPA-rated at 25 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway) and all-wheel-drive models get an estimated 24 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway).*

The third Equinox engine option breaks new ground in the compact crossover segment. It’s a 1.6-liter diesel, making the Equinox the first vehicle of its kind in North America to be offered as a diesel. This engine produces 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque and is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. The diesel Equinox is EPA-rated at 39 mpg combined (28 mpg city, 39 mpg highway) with front-wheel drive and 32 mpg combined (28 mpg city, 38 mpg highway) with all-wheel drive.*

Features

The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox is a five-door, five-seat compact crossover utility vehicle. It’s available in four trim levels, priced starting from $23,800.**

Standard equipment on the base Equinox L model includes 17-inch alloy wheels, Chevrolet MyLink® audio system with 7.0-inch touchscreen, split-folding rear seat, three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, tilt-and-telescoping steering column, tire-inflation kit, and more.

The Equinox LS trim level incorporates the applicable standard equipment from the Equinox L, and adds features like a space-saver spare tire, and rear carpeted floor mats. The LT model builds on the L and LS, adding HID headlights, SiriusXM® satellite radio, and a power driver’s seat.

The top Equinox trim level is the appropriately named Premier, which adds standard equipment like heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, fog lights, hands-free power tailgate, auto-dimming exterior mirrors with turn-signal indicators, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 8.0-inch touchscreen display. Some of the available options on the Premier include ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, navigation, and a Bose® premium audio system.

Design

The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox features a sleek exterior design that blends compact styling elements like the grille and muscular side surfacing with a traditional tall SUV shape. LED daytime running lights and taillights are standard, with HID headlights optional. Designers gave the Equinox horizontal taillights to emphasize its wide stance. The blend of car and SUV styling elements makes the Equinox even more pleasing to look at than its less-impressive competition.

Sleek exterior styling often creates a cramped-feeling interior, but that isn’t the case with the new Equinox. It features a “down-and-away” instrument panel that creates a more open feeling for the driver. A low windshield base allows for good outward visibility, even with the relatively low seating position, which in turn makes ingress and egress easier. A new “kneeling” front seat with forward-tilting bottom cushions creates a flat load floor when the rear seatbacks are folded.

The Equinox is available with the latest version of Chevy’s MyLink® infotainment system, which includes Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility. These systems allow drivers to import features and content from their phones into the infotainment system for an intuitive user experience. Like many other GM models, the Equinox is also available with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot (though a separate data plan is required).

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2019 Chevrolet Equinox includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, rearview camera system, and Chevy’s Teen Driver monitoring system. Optional features include the Safety Alert Seat, Surround Vision camera system, forward collision alert, low-speed forward automatic braking, lane-keep assist with lane departure warning, lane change alert with side blind-zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, and Rear Seat Reminder—meant to prevent the driver from leaving children or pets unattended in a parked car.

Verdict

The 2019 Chevrolet Equinox is well-equipped to take on its rivals in the compact crossover segment.
