2016 Ford Edge

New for 2016

The 2016 Ford Edge reflects Ford’s desire to elevate utility vehicle offerings over the past few years and the results are better than ever. The Edge underwent a complete redesign this year with more sophistication and flair than most SUVs, along with versatility, convenience and super-athletic performance.

A Tech-Focused Fashionable Crossover

The 2016 Ford Edge design is closer to a premium look with luxury surfacing and details, and the new model has some of the best trims and materials in its class. It offers super-refined cabin appointments and a powerful base engine with understated performance.

The new steering system makes driving this SUV a comfortable experience, and it perfectly bridges the gap between family wagon and luxury crossover in a way that previous versions hadn’t quite achieved. The result is a showcase of Ford innovation and a delightful driving experience.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2016 Ford Edge comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and the choice between front and all-wheel drive. The base engine is the 2.0-liter EcoBoost, an upgrade from last year's model with some new technology. It features a twin-scroll turbo with 245 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds. EPA-estimated fuel economy is rated at 24 mg combined (20 city/30 highway) with front-wheel drive,* which is standard, or 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway) with available all-wheel drive.*

For those who want a little more power, a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine version with 280 horsepower is available. The Edge Sport option features a twin-turbocharged, 2.7-liter, V-6 engine that cranks out 315 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque. Both choices are paired with the six-speed automatic transmission, but the Sport can reach up to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds.

The 2.0-liter model generates less noise at idle and wide-open throttle, while the V-6 engine is quieter at highway cruise speeds. All around, the Edge offers a much quieter driving experience than most SUVs on the market.

Each 2016 Ford Edge has precision steering and excellent handling, and the drivability is better than the previous versions, which features a smooth ride and little need for frequent downshifts.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Ford Edge is aptly named as it carries its edge from the exterior into the tiny details inside the cabin. It comes in SE, SEL, Titanium and Sport models -- and drivers can opt for the fully-loaded Edge, which rivals any luxury SUV at a much better price point. The base model starts at $28,600,** and includes standard features such as full power accessories, air conditioning, cruise control and the SYNC® connectivity system.

The SEL model features dual-zone climate control, upgraded cloth seats, reverse sensors and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Titanium model takes it even further by incorporating even more technology like a hands-free tailgate system, heated steering wheel, 12-speaker Sony audio system with HD Radio®, Panoramic Vista Roof, front camera with washer, heated rear seats and tons of other optional features.

This year, Ford introduced the new SYNC® 3 infotainment system for most of the models -- it features a capacitive screen interface with a streamlined menu system that is expected to make the driving experience much more enjoyable overall.

Ford has always been known for providing excellent basic features for all of its trims and the Edge is no exception. Details like the overhead console, tilt/telescopic steering adjustment and the small bins and storage cubbies make it a feature-rich car to drive.

Design

The second generation Edge offers plenty of new details that make it stand out even more in the line of SUV crossovers. The grille is more understated with thinner pieces of brightwork that give it a friendlier touch. It features a smooth contour that creates an attractive sport-wagon look, and taillights that wrap around the rear edges to show off the benefits of the LED arrays.

Inside, the changes are particularly noticeable -- it has a warm, formal aesthetic that fits the souped-up technical upgrades. Controls on the dashboard are clearly marked and there is soft-touch material almost everywhere in the interior. The matte black finish creates a sophisticated, clean look that suits the vehicle well.

Safety

Ford generally performs well on safety tests and the Edge delivers a lot of active safety technology that makes the drive more reassuring. It offers Lane Keep assist that can help with applying steering wheel force to keep drivers in their lane, and even the base models offer a rearview camera system for easier performance in reverse. Top trims include a 180-degree front camera as well as adaptive cruise control, a BLIS® blind spot system and collision warning with brake support.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Ford Edge is a high-quality car with versatility and excellent performance. After the full redesign, it stands to be one of the most attractive SUVs on the market and offers an elegant driving experience with refinement and class. The robust lineup of engines is sure to please every type of driver while the trim choices gives buyers total control over how simple or edgy they want their new car to be.
