Steps to Take in Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution

New Year's Eve has come and gone, but that doesn't mean you've run out of time to make a New Year's resolution. Of course, making a resolution is a bit easier than keeping one. Some statistics state that only eight percent of people who make a resolution are able to achieve it, but with a bit of help, the team at Lynch Ford Chevrolet is confident you can reach whatever milestone you've set.

1. Make it specific

Use the SMART method to jump-start your process. If a goal is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound, you'll be in good shape towards achieving your resolution before you even start.

2. Measure progress

Now that you've determined what can be measured about your goal (a specific dollar amount saved each week, pounds lost each month, etc), it's time to start measuring! This will also help you realize when you've hit a plateau so you can adjust and keep making progress.

3. Patience is key

Change doesn't occur overnight, and positive progress rarely comes steadily throughout the journey. But with patience and persistence, you'll be able to achieve lasting changes.

4. Schedule, schedule, schedule!

If you "can't find the time," it might be time to take a step back and reevaluate some priorities. We all have the same amount of hours in the day, and nobody "finds" time - we make time for the things that are important to us.

5. Remember that something is better than nothing

On that note, if you are crunched for time, remember that any amount of effort is better than none at all. Don't have time for an hour workout? Give twenty minutes instead. Ate those french fries at lunch? Don't toss your diet out the window just because you think "I've already messed up, I'll just restart next week." Any effort towards your goal is better than nothing.

6. Share it!

Share your goals with family and friends. Doing so will help you stick to your resolution while also receiving support from those closest to you. Better yet, find someone with similar goals and serve as each other's accountability partner. It's harder to give up your goal when others are cheering you on.

If you want to make and keep a New Year’s resolution this year, these tips can help you stick to your goal, even when the going gets tough. Realistic goals coupled with positive thoughts and lots of motivation is a recipe for success, and with each success, tackling new resolutions gets easier every year.
