Overview

The Volvo S60 is the entry-level option in the brand’s sedan segment, but an “entry-level” Volvo is anything but bottom shelf. Volvo engineers designed the S60 to be functionally smart, efficiently capable, and razor-sharp sexy. The all-new S60 offers everything you could want in a 21st-century luxury sedan, as well as a few perks you never knew you couldn’t live without.

The Perfect Ride for…

The jack of all trades. With multiple powertrain options in a compact body, the Volvo S60 can fit in anywhere. It's available with either traditional gas or plug-in hybrid powertrains, both of which are elegantly efficient without sacrificing power. The result is a sporty sedan that can glide on the open road and maneuver through city streets with equanimity. The best part? This state-of-the-art luxury sport sedan comes available with a practical price tag, starting at just $35,800.

Power Options

The 2019 S60 comes available in four trim levels: the base-but-comprehensive Momentum, the luxuriously refined Inscription, the track-inspired R-Design, and the future all-electric Polestar. While the Polestar is not yet available to the public, the rest of the lineup has already hit the streets with three progressive powertrains to choose from.

The menu starts with the more-than-capable T5 engine. This 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine benefits from the direct fuel injection and turbocharged aspiration, delivering as much as 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. In the lightweight S60, that power goes to good use, providing excellent acceleration and output, while still sipping gas at an enviable EPA-estimated 36 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg in the city.**

Add in all-wheel drive and a supercharger to get the next-level T6 engine, bumping output up to 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. While the turbocharger boosts performance at higher RPMs, the added supercharger will be noticed at lower RPMs, providing responsive acceleration any time you want it. The advanced AWD system with the innovative Instant Traction™ feature from Volvo uses a suite of sensors and an onboard computer to constantly monitor driving characteristics and automatically distribute power to ensure optimal traction at all times.

Finally, Volvo offers this new generation of S60 with its latest innovation in hybrid power: the T8 eAWD Twin Engine Plug-in Hybrid. Just like the T6 adds a supercharger onto the T5, the T8 adds an 87-hp electric motor onto the supercharged and turbocharged T6. The result is an astonishing 400 horsepower of remarkably efficient performance. The gasoline engine powers the front wheels and the electric motor powers the rear wheels, offering instant acceleration and on-demand all-wheel drive to the tune of a whopping 472 lb-ft of torque. In addition, drivers will have the option of switching to all-electric power, which uses the battery only to offer a range of 31 miles of zero-emission cruising.

Key Features

Comfort

Volvo puts passengers first with features that offer the leading edge of technological advancements in comfort, infotainment, and safety. The interior features a multi-zone electronic climate system, which automatically adjusts temperature and fan settings to maintain a desired comfort level—just like your home’s thermostat—offering separate settings for individual passengers. Both the cabin air filter and the Volvo-exclusive Clean Zone Air Quality System come as standard features in all trim levels, ensuring that the air you and your passengers are breathing is as pure as the ride itself. The front seats can also be upgraded to include a backrest massage function, which can provide front passengers with multiple unique programs of varying speeds and intensities of stress relief. Combine that with the available heated and ventilated seats, and you may find it challenging to get out of the car, even at the end of a long commute.

Infotainment

Expansive digital displays provide crystal-clear readouts for both driving data and infotainment resources. The instrument panel has gone digital, and the S60’s standard 12.3-inch digital driver display provides all the usual telemetry data like speed and fuel levels, but it also adds comprehensive navigation tools like 3D maps and road sign information. The 9-inch center display offers access to all of your connected devices through either Apple Carplay, USB, or a wireless Bluetooth® connection, all of which can be effortlessly controlled with intuitive voice commands or the vivid LCD touchscreen. What’s more, you and your passengers can enjoy all the streaming content through the immaculate sound created by the standard harmon/kardon® premium sound system with 13 speakers (including a subwoofer with patented Air Woofer Technology™) or the available Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system with 10-channel amplifier, an astonishing 1100W output, and 15 separate high-end speakers (including a tweeter-on-top center speaker that minimizes acoustic reflection from the windscreen).

Safety

The 2019 S60 offers the latest in semi-autonomous automotive safety features from Volvo engineers. The safety systems in the S60 use external sensors and cameras along with a sophisticated computer-powered algorithm to watch the road from every angle and take action to avoid hazards. That action can either be visual and audible cues to alert the driver, or it can sometimes go further and swiftly take action to avert a collision before the driver would have time to react. Features include:

  • Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™)
  • Cross Traffic Alert
  • Rear Collision Mitigation Support
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • Oncoming Lane Mitigation
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Run-off Road Mitigation

The S60 also offers the automaker’s new City Safety Collision Avoidance Technology as a standard feature, which can detect pedestrians, cyclists, and even large animals. If danger is detected, it can alert the driver or autonomously apply the brakes to avoid impact.

Alternative Options

Volvo offers several other options that are just as impressive as the all-new S60. The larger S90 sedan includes every bit of the cutting-edge tech but with a much more expansive full-size sedan body, and the XC60 luxury SUV—which also received a redesign for 2019—puts it all in the form of a capable and versatile mountain climber.
