How To Communicate Effectively With Your Mechanic

by Client

With the cost of car repairs and servicing so high, it's important to have a good relationship with your mechanic. Part of this behavior stems from being able to communicate effectively with your mechanic, and while this isn't entirely down to you, there is plenty you can do to ensure this happens as often as possible. Think about these communication tips from Client to help you deal with your mechanic more effectively.

Find a Mechanic You Like

Getting on first-name terms is always a good idea, so when you first meet your mechanic, ensure you are open and friendly to establish a more relaxed, informal relationship. It may seem like stating the obvious, but asking how your mechanic is and thanking him or her for their help and advice will always garner a positive response. If you find a mechanic you like, it's worth making the effort to get to know him or her on more than just a basic level

Ask Questions.

Make it clear to your mechanic you are interested in what is happening and the work he or she is carrying out on your car. Ask lots of questions and let your mechanic know how technically-minded you are by asking him or her to spell it out if you aren't, or acknowledging your good knowledge of cars, if applicable. Be careful not to challenge your mechanic in an aggressive or accusatory way, but do make sure you feel you can find out more about the process.

Hands-On Learning Is Helpful

Being shown something is often easier than having the mechanic try and describe it, and that can work well for you, too. If you want the mechanic to have a look at something, show it to him or her on the car or, if you are referring to a noise, take your mechanic on a test drive so he or she can hear it at the same time as you. The more you can share about the symptoms of a potential problem, the better-placed your mechanic will be to fix them.

Establish Expectations

Always agree on expectations with your mechanic. Tell him or her if you want to be consulted before any additional costs are incurred, or for costs above a certain level. If you want an update during the day, agree on a time when the mechanic will call you or when you can call them. Talk about whether a text message is enough or if you want an actual phone call. You cannot criticize your mechanic for keeping you in the dark if you don't agree on how he or she can keep you informed.

That, of course, means you also need to make sure your mechanic can easily get hold of you. Keep your mobile phone with you, and tell your mechanic any particular times you will be unavailable. Suggest an alternative contact or at least make arrangements for your mechanic to leave a message somewhere. If your mechanic needs to speak to you, make sure you return calls quickly. Work on your car may be delayed if your mechanic cannot get the information he or she needs.

Communicating with your mechanic effectively is just as important as any other business relationship. Make an effort to help improve contact between the two parties, and it should save a lot of time and potential frustration.
