4 Take-Aways from CNET's First Drive of the All-New A-Class Sedan

The team at RBM of Atlanta has no shortage of words when it comes to singing the praises of the latest generation A-Class sedan, but sometimes we know it's important to hear it from a third party. Luckily, the editors at CNET: Roadshow, a website devoted to unpaid and unbiased opinions about the auto world's latest offerings, agree with us that the all-new A-Class is nothing short of extraordinary. Here are some highlights of the first drive:

Impressive Styling

The reviewer loved the looks. Starting with the exterior's sleek lines and razor-thin drag coefficient (0.22), he admired the "minimalist approach to exterior surfacing... with smooth surfaces and soft edges, and only a single character line across its profile." He also liked the modern LED head- and taillights, as well as the larger wheel options. However, the interior is what really stole the show. Mostly, he enjoyed the large touch screens and futuristic back-lit AC vents and control panels in the dash. He also noted the deceptively roomy interior in both the front and back seats, as well as ample trunk space.

Innovative Tech

During the test, the reviewer had fun with the innovative Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) feature. This exclusive system uses multiple input methods, such as the smartphone-like touchscreen, a conveniently-located touchpad, steering wheel controls, or intuitive voice commands, to access a wealth of connectivity features on the road. Not only does the massive touchscreen offer the same pinch and swipe usability as a smartphone, but there's also the touchpad in the center console for those that don't want to smudge up the screen. If you're driving, you can literally talk to the MBUX, and it will talk back, meaning you never have to take your hands off the wheel.

Intelligent Powertrain

The new A-Class offers the power you would expect in an entry-level sedan from a brand that has a long history of producing impressively powerful performers. The standard 2.0-liter inline four engine will be turbocharged, so it blends power and efficiency with grace. You'll also have the choice between front-wheel-drive and the brand's 4Matic all-wheel drive, which uses the onboard computer to sense changing road conditions and constantly adapt power distribution. Speaking of adapting, the reviewer also liked the cooperation between the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and the various drive modes. No matter what kind of driving you throw at the A-Class, it adapts.

Inexpensive Pricing

The reviewer concluded with an affirmation that the new A-Class Sedan may offer mid-level sedan features and styling, but it's going to be offered at a much more entry-level price structure. We don't know the price yet, but Mercedes-Benz has stated on the record that it will start under $35,000. Even with upgrades and add-ons, you'll still be able to get in the luxury lifestyle at a reasonable price.
