New for 2016

Changes for 2016 are limited to the addition of a rearview camera, and the substitution of two paint colors.

Muscle for Hire

The Ford F-150 has been the bestselling vehicle in the U.S. seemingly since time immemorial, but now it’s time to meet its big brother. The 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty is a range of three-quarter ton and one-ton trucks for buyers who need a little more muscle. Like the F-150, the Super Duty models also feature technology and design features you’d normally expect to kind in a car, making them useful both on the job site and off.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2016 Ford Super Duty is available with one gasoline and one diesel powertrain, both of which provide the grunt to go bumper-to-bumper with the heavy-duty truck competition.

The gasoline option is Ford’s 6.2-liter V8, which produces 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque; Ford claims the horsepower figure is best in class. Both engine options are paired exclusively with a TorqShift six-speed automatic transmission, and either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Since the Super Duty is classified as a heavy-duty truck, Ford does not publish EPA fuel-economy figures.

Also available is Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbocharged diesel V8, which can muster 440 hp and 860 lb-ft. Ford not only claims that both figures are best-in-class, but also that the F-450 model tops the charts in some crucial towing figures. The company says the F-450’s 31,200-pound maximum towing capacity and 40,400-pound gross combined weight rating (GCWR) are best-in-class as well. The F-450 can also tow 26,500 pounds when equipped with a fifth wheel.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty is a heavy-duty pickup truck that can be configured in almost as many ways as there are jobs for it to tackle. In addition to three models (F-250, F-350, and F-450), there are three cab options (Regular Cab, Crew Cab, and Super Cab), and the option for either a 6 and 3/4’ or 8’ bed. Pricing starts at $32,385.*

The base Super Duty model is the XL, which comes fairly well equipped for a work vehicle. Standard equipment includes a Tailgate Assist with quick release, tie-down hooks, a 40/20/40 split-folding vinyl bench seat, dash-top tray, instrument cluster with multifunction message center, tilt/telescope steering wheel, and more.

Next up is the XLT, which incorporates all of the applicable standard features from the XL, and adds chrome exterior trim, 18-inch cast aluminum wheels, integrated trailer brake controller, cloth seats, Sync voice control, steering wheel audio controls, and other features.

Midway through the lineup, the Lariat model starts to add more luxurious features like dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable pedals, 4.2-inch LCD Productivity Screen, rearview camera, auto-dimming rearview mirror, reverse sensing system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, Sony premium audio system, Sync with MyFord Touch infotainment system, leather-trimmed power front seats, fog lights, and more.

The King Ranch is the penultimate Super Duty model, adding features such as remote engine start, navigation, a memory system for the front seats, mirrors, and pedals, heated and cooled front seats, illuminated cab steps, two-tone paint, and model-specific interior trim.

Finally, the Platinum tops the F-Series Super Duty range. It includes all of the applicable features from the other four models, and adds 20-inch wheels with a model-specific design, Tailgate Step, satin chrome grille, heated steering wheel, and classier interior trim.

Exterior/Interior

The 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty boasts tough exterior styling that builds on the signature look of recent Ford trucks. The big bar grille certainly makes an impression, and whether in basic form or all gussied up with the chrome and other exterior jewelry available on the more extensive models, the Super Duty has plenty of street presence.

Base models offer a spartan but comfortable interior that can stand up to the abuse of a work environment. Alternatively, it can be specified with soft-touch materials, and even leather and wood trim that make the Super Duty a bona fide luxury vehicle. Ford’s Sync with MyFord Touch infotainment system makes sure drivers can stay connected too.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty includes anti-lock brakes, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, Trailer Sway Control, and a full complement of airbags. Optional features include a rearview camera, and a rear sensing system.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Ford F-Series Super Duty has the capability to handle anything the world can throw at it.
