New for 2016

The biggest addition for the 2016 Ford Escape is SYNC® 3, which replaces Ford's MyFord Touch system. Other than that, the Escape returns for the 2016 model year with all the fun and versatility that has made is such a popular choice among crossover SUV shoppers.

Escape from the Ordinary

The popularity of crossover SUVs continues to grow, and with that growth comes an influx of models for car shoppers like you to choose from. But when a large number of those models suffer from the same drab, uninspired design, how do you know which is best for you?

Introducing the 2016 Ford Escape. Far from your ordinary crossover SUV, the Ford Escape continues to attract drivers thanks to its sharp styling, even sharper handling, and excellent fuel economy. In addition to its inspired design, the Escape returns for 2016 as an even smarter choice thanks to Ford’s new SYNC® 3 infotainment system.

Powertrains and Performance

With no less than three engines to choose from, and available all-wheel drive, the 2016 Ford Escape was designed to satisfy a myriad of driving needs.

Standard is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the front-wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmission that pairs nicely with the four-cylinder to provide peppy acceleration. This particular setup returns an impressive EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined (22 city/31 highway).*

If it’s a little more impetus you require then fear not, the Escape can also be had with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder that generates 178 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Whereas the 2.5-liter features only front-wheel drive, the 1.6-liter can be outfitted with available all-wheel drive, which is perfect for slippery road conditions. Fuel economy remains strong with the turbocharged option, returning 26 mpg combined 23 city/32 highway) with front-wheel drive,* and dropping only a few mpg with all-wheel drive.

For true thrill-seekers, there is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that belts out 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Despite it being the most powerful engine in the lineup, the turbocharged 2.0-liter returns 25 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway) with front-wheel drive,* and similar numbers with all-wheel drive.

Features and Trims

Getting the best value is important when buying a new vehicle, which is why the 2016 Ford Escape remains a great option for consumers looking to get the best bang for their hard-earned buck. It starts at $23,100,** and is available in three trim levels: S, SE, and Titanium.

S models are handsomely equipped and come with a veritable treasure trove of goodies. Standard features include 17-inch wheels, full power accessories, and keyless entry. Cruise control is also standard, as is air-conditioning, a 60/40-split folding and reclining rear seat. Of course, if it’s technology you crave then you’ll be more than satisfies, as the Escape sports a standard rearview camera, SYNC® with voice commands, and six-speaker sound system, complete with USB ports and Bluetooth® phone connectivity.

Upgrading to the SE nets you even more comforts. In addition the S model’s list, the SE adds 17-inch alloy wheel, a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, automatic headlight and fog lights, a keyless entry keypad, rear privacy glass, and upgraded to cloth upholstery to name a few.

Finally, at the top of the totem pole rests the Titanium trim. It combines premium and convenience features such Ford's new SYNC® 3 with navigation, heated front seats, a power liftgate, and leather upholstery. The Titanium trim also replaces the SE’s 17-inch alloys with sportier 18-inch wheels. And for the audiophiles out there, the Titanium trim comes with a 10-speaker premium Sony sound system.

Design

Ford has done an excellent job unifying its design in recent years, which translates to a profound road presence for the 2016 Escape. Flared arches provide an added sense of athleticisms, and the large radiator grille up front is equally eye-catching. Rather than get carried away with the shape of its exterior, the Escape is undeniably fun without falling to the same design pitfalls that hinder so many crossover models.

Inside, the 2016 Ford Escape is equally engaging. The seats are comfortable, with plenty of padding for support during trips short and long. Overall fit and finish is also impressive, with real quality materials and surfaces.

The available SYNC® 3 with eight-inch display touchscreen provide an extra degree of luxury, while the rear seats easily accommodate full-size passengers—and half-size ones, too. Cargo space behind the rear seats is also impressive, with the Escape boasting 34.3 cubic feet of space. What’s more, with a mere flip of a one-touch lever, the rear seats fold down, bringing total cargo capacity to palatial 68.1 cubes.

Safety

The 2016 Ford Escape is jam-packed with standard safety features designed to keep you and those you love safe and sound. Antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, a driver knee airbag, and full-length side curtain airbags are all standard.

Also standard is Ford's MyKey® (which allows owners to set vehicle parameters for younger drivers), a rearview camera, and blind-spot mirrors. Rear parking sensors are optional on the S and SE and standard on the Titanium. Meanwhile, a blind-spot warning system with cross-traffic alert is optional on the Titanium.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Ford Escape is blessed with quick steering, a number of responsive yet fuel-efficient engines, and liberal smattering of technologies. Its versatility is evident in its size and accommodating cargo capacity—and its attractively low MSRP doesn’t hurt either.

If you’re looking for a value-packed, fun, and engaging crossover SUV, break free and escape from the ordinary with the 2016 Ford Escape.
