New for 2016

The 2016 Dodge Viper’s bite gets even scarier thanks to the introduction of the venomous Viper ACR (American Club Racing) model.

Pavement Predator

Just as its name suggests, the 2016 Dodge Viper is not the type of sports car you cuddle up next to. While rivals like the Chevrolet Corvette, Nissan GT-R, and Porsche 911 rely on electronic assistants to even out their rides, the Viper takes a different approach. For the Viper, complicated electronics diminish the joy of driving and should never replace good old-fashioned driving skill.

Instead, Dodge’s sporty serpent is much more willing to unleash its raw power into the hands of drivers willing to put in the effort required to taming its beastly performance. It may not be the easiest sports car to drive, but we’re willing to wager it’s damn near the most thrilling and rewarding.

Powertrains and Performance

Get the behind the wheel of the 2016 Dodge Viper and the soundtrack of your life will be replaced by the raucous roar of its massive 8.4-liter V10 engine.

The handcrafted, all-aluminum engine is located mid-front and generates a heart-pounding 645 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of delicious torque-y goodness. Power is channeled to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Purists will rejoice that this is the only available transmission.

In terms of real-world performance, the 2016 Dodge Viper can slither from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. It features a top speed of 206 mph, and should provide more than enough exhilaration for adrenaline junkies.

What goes has to stop, though, which is why the Viper features a robust Brembo brake system complete with accent painted fixed aluminum calipers and 14x1.26-inch vented/slotted rotors. All that stopping power translates to braking that is firm and confident even under extreme conditions.

While the Viper’s natural habitat is the racetrack, its ability to adapt to more day-to-day surroundings is evident by virtue of its single-mode high-performance suspension or available driver-selectable two-mode suspension featuring Bilstein® DampTronic® select shock absorbers with street and track settings.

Remember when we said “complicated electronics diminish the joy of driving and should never replace good old-fashioned driving skill,” well that’s mostly true. While Dodge intended to deliver a more primal driving experience with the Viper, it also understands that drivers would appreciate a little help from time to time. That’s why the Viper can also be had with an available five-mode Electronic Stability Control System+ with launch control, which helps drivers maintain control of the car during more taxing situations.

Features and Trims

The 2016 Dodge Viper starts at $87,895* and is available in five trim levels: SRT, GT, GTC, GTS, and ACR.

SRT models sit on 18-inch front and 19-inch rear wheels and come with keyless ignition/entry, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, and manually adjustable seats.

Despite its penchant to deliver a more traditional driving experience, SRT models come standard with a laundry list of tech creature comforts, including a rearview camera, an 8.4-inch touchscreen (part of Dodge’s award-winning Uconnect® infotainment system), a navigation system, SRT performance apps, and Bluetooth® phone/audio connectivity. The SRT also sports a 12-speaker harmon/kardon® surround-sound audio system (just in case you ever tire of the Viper’s boisterous V10).

Step up to the GT trim and you’ll get a number of cosmetic and performance touches like “GT” badging, two-mode driver-adjustable dampers, a racier hood, and leather seats with Alcantara inserts. A six-way power driver seat replaces the SRT’s manually adjustable version.

Climb the ladder even further and the GTC adds a five-mode stability control system, unique gunmetal interior touches, and premium leather upholstery and trim.

The GTS kicks things into higher gear with a 19-inch front wheel and an 18-speaker harmon/kardon® audio system.

Naturally, the most extreme version of the Viper is the ACR. The ACR actually removes some content from the Viper’s features list in order to provide maximum weight savings and performance. There is less sound insulation, lighter-weight carpeting, manual seats, and a three-speaker audio system.

In exchange for the above, ACR models roll on 19-inch Gloss Black wheels and comes with a painted  wing spoiler and painted aero wing assembly kit. It also comes with more aggressive summer tires, six-piston brake calipers, carbon ceramic brake rotors, a stiffer suspension, and manually adjustable spring rates.

Design

The first thing your eyes will notice (your ears will hear the sound of its symphonic powertrain long before you see it) is the 2016 Dodge Viper’s long, and we do mean long, clamshell hood. It stretches on for what seems like miles. It’s almost the entire length of the vehicle, and coupled with the hood’s performance-focused air-extractors (vents), adds to the Viper’s commanding road presence.

Speaking of the hood, it’s made from a single piece of hand-laid carbon fiber. Readers unfamiliar with carbon should know that the advanced material is incredibly lightweight and strong. In fact, carbon fiber is five times as strong as steel, two times as stiff, yet weighs about two-thirds less.

Visually, the 2016 Viper does not disappoint. LED front and rear lamps add a touch of modernity to its overall look, while its broad shoulders and aggressive stance further the Viper’s unique position as the exotic American sports car of our time. It’s appropriate that a vehicle so adept on the road and track would also be so visually stunning.

Inside, the Viper is exactly what you’d expect: driver focused. The cockpit is low to the ground, and the Viper’s leather-wrapped steering wheel, complete with redundant audio controls, is a pleasure to use. We’re also big fans of its standard Uconnect® infotainment system, which incorporates a number of handy apps and features to help you stay connected to the world outside the Viper.

In place of a traditional analog instrument cluster is a modern digital display. Here information such as navigation and vehicle status, as well as real-time performance information, is piped through a gorgeous seven-inch display.

Seating is another high note. The Viper’s seats are particularly grippy, which is an advantage during more spirited driving sessions. While most cars of its ilk forgo creature comforts to focus solely on performance, the Viper’s interior provides a good mix of both worlds.

Safety

Standard safety features for the 2016 Dodge Viper include advanced multistage front airbags, driver/passenger seat belts with preten and load limiters, side front door airbags, speed sensitive power locks, and a rearview camera.

Bottom Line

If you’re searching for a true American exotic sports car that won’t hold your hand and delivers unfiltered performance, then look no further than the 2016 Dodge Viper.
