2016 Jeep® Compass

New for 2016

The 2016 Jeep® Compass rolls out some exciting changes for this crossover SUV. While the top-level Limited trim is no longer in the lineup, both the Sport and Latitude trims have some updated features including automatic headlights, Bluetooth® and satellite radio. The biggest news is that 2016 will be the last year that the Compass is available. Jeep has plans to unveil an entirely new model in 2017.

Rugged and Off Road

In keeping with classic Jeep® capabilities, the Jeep Compass offers superior off-road handling over its nearest competitors. The Freedom Drive II® package lets this crossover vehicle go even further across more rugged terrain without sacrificing on comfort and stability. Combining an affordable price point with all-terrain capabilities makes this compact SUV a consistent seller.

Powertrain and Performance

Powered by a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine in the base model, the Jeep Compass offers 158 horsepower and 141 pounds-per-foot of torque. On the Sport version, the five-speed, manual transmission is the standard, while the Latitude's continuously variable transmission, or "CVT," smooths out gear shifts during acceleration. The base model also comes with front-wheel drive.

The five-speed, manual transmission offers a reasonable fuel economy of 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.* Even better, driving with the CVT gives you an estimated fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway.* Both of these models rank well when compared to other models in the same class like the Ford Escape and Hyundai Tucson.

Upgraded options include a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine that churns out 172 horsepower and 165 pounds-per-foot of torque. This option comes standard on all-wheel-drive models. The Sport trim offers some additional options with a five-speed manual, six-speed automatic or the Freedom Drive II® system, which uses a CVT.

The acceleration capacity is also sure to please: The all-wheel-drive model with the 2.4-liter engine goes from zero to 60 mph in just 9.4 seconds.

Features and Trims

Dropping the top trip level for 2016 means that now the five-passenger Jeep Compass crossover SUV starts at $19,595** and has two trim levels, Sport and Latitude, and two sub-trims -- one for each primary trim.

The Sport trim comes with some excellent standard features, including 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, roof rails, air-conditioning, cruise control, 60-to-40-split folding rear-seat backs, a tilt steering wheel, Bluetooth®, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack and more.

Add the Power Value Group to the Sport and get full-power accessories, heated mirrors, remote keyless entry and several other convenience features.

The Sport SE includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls and heated front seats. It also comes with some design upgrades to give this version a more sleek look.

Both the Sport and the Latitude offer the optional All-Weather Capability Group, which adds 17-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, tow hooks, daytime running lights, an engine block heater and all-season floor mats. Another optional package is the Freedom Drive II® Off-Road Group with 17-inch alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, upgraded all-wheel-drive system, skid plates, a brake-lock differential, full-size spare tire, heavy-duty alternator and other features for extra off-road comfort.

The Latitude trim has everything offered in the Sport; plus it adds everything from the Power Value Group and several upgrades from the Sport SE: heated front seats, a 6.5-inch touchscreen "infotainment" system, reclining rear seats and a 115-volt power outlet.

Only for the Latitude, the High Altitude Edition package includes a sunroof, leather upholstery, six-way power driver seat, chrome exterior trim and more. Optional enhancements include 18-inch wheels and automatic climate control.

Three other available packages for the Latitude include the Security and Cargo Convenience Group, Premium Sound group and the Sun and Sound group. Security and Cargo Convenience comes with remote ignition, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, alarm system and voice controls. The Premium Sound package bumps the stereo system up to nine Boston Acoustic speakers and a subwoofer. Sun and Sound brings everything from the Premium Sound package and adds a sunroof too.

Design

In 2014, the Compass interior got a complete overhaul that carries through to the 2016 model. Comfortable front seats and manual lumbar support with the High Altitude Edition make the Compass a good choice for a long ride.

The 6.5-inch "infotainment" touchscreen with ample music-storage space has another optional navigation package. When paired with the Premium Sound package, nifty features like the convenient flip-down speakers in the raised lift gate make drives more fun.

The Compass offers 53.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat. When transporting passengers, this crossover SUV has a generous 22.7 cubic feet of space in the cargo hold.

Safety

Every Jeep Compass comes with anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, brake assist and electronic roll mitigation. Front-seat side airbags and side-curtain airbags offer six total zones of protection with engineered crush zones designed to absorb impact.

Bottom Line

The Jeep Compass looks a lot like the Jeep Cherokee and delivers many of the same features at a rock-bottom price. As a smaller, more versatile vehicle, it offers better gas mileage and off-road capabilities inside its classic, rugged Jeep® exterior.
