Vehicle Spotlight: 2015 Dodge Durango

The Star That Was Written in the Stars

It doesn’t take a psychic to know that SUVs are popular vehicles among American shoppers, and will remain so for years to come. At least, that’s what our crystal ball tells us. Their striking mixture of interior space and power make them the go-to choice for individuals and families seeking the freedom and versatility provided by these four-wheel titans. And no other full-size SUV embodies all of those qualities and more than the 2015 Dodge Durango.

Powertrains and Performance

All Durango models, save for the R/T, come with a 3.6-liter V6 engine. This powerful mill supplies 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and comes mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is available for those that want it. For added grit, an available dual-exhaust system replaces the standard exhaust, which bumps power output to 295 hp.

A 5.7-liter V8 is standard on the R/T and optional on Limited and Citadel models (more on trims later). Naturally, it serves up more power than the V6, and is rated at 360 hp and 390 lb-ft. The V8 shares the V6’s eight-speed automatic and standard RWD makeup. But instead of an available AWD system, V8 models get access to a more rugged on-demand 4WD system, which features a two-speed transfer case with dedicated low-range gearing.

You’d expect a full-size SUV like the Durango to exhibit aggressive driving manners, but it’s actually quite pleasant to drive – dare we say rather maneuverable – at low speeds. This pleasant nature translates to highway speeds, too, where the Durango keeps noise levels to near library-levels.

Of course, the Durango can be equipped to tackle the great outdoors, too. Thanks to its available 4WD system, the Durango remains confident even when the going gets rough—something its car-based competitors simply can’t match.

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, V8-powered models can tow a remarkable 7,400 pounds, while V6 versions top out at 6,200 pounds.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Dodge Durango starts at $30,495.* For that price, SXT models get a veritable boat-load of standard features, including 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, heated exterior mirrors, cruise control, and tri-zone automatic climate control. For the tech-centric, the Durango comes equipped with Bluetooth® audio and phone connectivity, Uconnect® with voice controls, and a five-inch touchscreen, complete with six-speaker sound system, SD card slot, and AUX/USB inputs for portable media devices.

Next up is the Limited, which is anything but.  It expands on the SXT by adding the Customer Preferred Order Package, which counts roof rails, an eight-way power driver seat, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel among its many added features. Limited model also come with the Popular Equipment Group. This package adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

But it doesn’t stop there. Limited models also get LED running lights, remote start, leather upholstery, and heated second-row seats to name a few. The Limited trim also swaps out the SXT’s five-inch touchscreen for a larger 8.4-inch screen, along with an upgraded version of Uconnect.

R/T models start with the Limited’s standard features (where applicable) and dials up the attitude with unique 20-inch black alloy wheels, a lowered sport-tuned suspension, and sportier exterior trim. R/T models also up their street cred with an upgraded sound system from Beats by Dr.Dre.

Finally, the Citadel builds on the R/T’s content but subs in a chrome grille and other premium features such as upgraded leather upholstery and a navigation system.

Design

The Durango is one handsome SUV, and how dressed up (or down) it looks largely depends on what trim you select. The sportiest of the bunch is easily the R/T trim, with its unique blacked-out crosshair grille and 20-inch alloy wheels. If chrome makes you weak in the knees then we suggest the top-of-the-line Citadel trim, which offers a plethora of exterior brightwork and imposing 20-inch polished aluminum wheels.

Regardless of trim, the 2015 Durango looks the part. Its projector beam headlights pierce into darkness, while its rear-facing racetrack LEDs (made of 192 individual lamps) form a ribbon of light that legend says can be seen during even the blackest of nights.

With a re-sculpted hood and lower fascia, the 2015 Durango strikes a lean and mean profile. A look that is sure to please fans old and new, as well as buyers yearning for a traditional yet commanding presence on the road.

The Durango’s interior captures all the gruff and tough attitude of the exterior, while managing to mix in some style and refinement. Regardless of trim level, you’ll find a cabin that is both elegant and upscale. Material quality is excellent throughout, and the 2015 Durango offers occupants plenty of space. What’s more, with the second and third row folded down, the Durango can carry up to 84.5 cubic feet of cargo.

Safety

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, trailer sway control, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. A rearview camera and parking sensors are optional on the SXT and standard on all other Durango models.

No doubt the Durango was designed to look good, but it’s clear Dodge took great strides to ensure safety was a priority. That means not only building a model that can withstand collisions, but one that can actively avoid them, too.

Bottom Line

Despite a throng of rivals vying for your attention, the 2015 Durango swats away the competition thanks to its roomy cabin, powerful engines, and never-say-die character. In fact, the Durango goes beyond what many shoppers expect from a full-size SUV by sporting rugged good looks, an inordinate amount of onboard technologies, and impressive road manners.
