Don’t Let Your Car Overheat

With the dog days of summer upon us, the Bisbee Honda of Danville team wanted to remind you about an important system in your vehicle—the cooling system. Since temperatures are soaring above 100 degrees on some days, your car is having to work even harder than ever to keep your engine cool. It’s a good idea to keep an eye on your coolant temperature gauge. Most car manufacturers place the ideal operating temperature in the middle of the gauge. If it’s a little lower, there’s no cause for concern. If you see the temperature gauge get too hot, you’ll want to have the coolant system looked at by one of our highly-trained technicians.

What’s the big deal?

Antifreeze, or coolant, flows through your vehicle’s engine to reduce heat. Then it flows through the radiator, where it is cooled by your vehicle’s fan and the air flowing through your grille. Sometimes, because of its age, antifreeze can’t perform its job as well. When it gets dirty, it can cause temperature sensors and the thermostat to malfunction. If your vehicle overheats, it could lead to reduced oil viscosity, which would prevent it from properly doing its job. It can also cause parts of the engine to warp, creating even bigger problems. If there is still pressure in your coolant system and your car overheats, it can cause the hoses to expand and even leak or burst. In a worst-case scenario, you could blow your head gasket and need very costly repairs.

How can you prevent it?

Having your coolant regularly flushed and filled with fresh antifreeze is one of the best ways to keep your cooling system working well. This will ensure that the antifreeze is clean enough to do its job properly, and allow any coolant temperature sensors, as well as the thermostat and water pump, to stay clean. Dirty coolant isn't as effective at keeping your engine temperatures in a safe operating range and can lead to a host of other issues.
