Recently Honda filed a company patent for an amazing technology that would enable drivers to see pedestrians that are out of their field of vision. The technology uses sensors and augmented reality to display pedestrians on a car’s windshield.

According to the patent, sensors would be placed around the car that would detect pedestrians and then show where they are by displaying an avatar on an augmented reality heads-up display on the windshield. When cars pull up to an intersection the alert system would display an intersection icon on your windshield and avatars for nearby pedestrian’s drivers might now be able to see.

It may even give birds-eye-view of the vehicle, allowing drivers to see pedestrians located behind or on the sides of the vehicle. Once the car moves past the intersection the avatars would disappear. It would only show pedestrians that are within a predetermined distance from the crosswalk or roadway. This way the heads-up display isn't littered with avatars of people everywhere.

Heads-up displays aren’t new, but this technology is more advanced then what’s available, and would change safety in so many ways.

Companies file patents they never end up following through with all the time, but Honda has some incredible things coming, and we’re all excited to see what’s next.
