Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost® engine has been awarded the 2016 International Engine of the Year for the fifth year in a row, beating out 32 other global manufacturers in the sub-1.0-litre class. That’s 19 more manufacturers than it originally competed with in its 2012 debut year.

Praised for its drivability and performance, it also scored exceedingly well in economy, refinement, and technology.

Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost® engine powers vehicles in 72 countries and is available with 100 PS (98.6 hp), 125 PS (123 hp), 140 PS (138 hp), and up to 180 PS (178 hp) in the Ford Fiesta R2.

Packing a punch

Car enthusiasts around the world may be surprised to hear that a 1.0-litre EcoBoost® engine with 140 PS exhibited a greater power-to-litre ratio than the Bugatti Veyron.

A Formula Ford with a road-legal 205 PS engine rounded the famous German Nüburgring circuit in 7 minutes and 22 seconds, beating a Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari Enzo, and Pagani Zonda – all supercars with 600+ hp.

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost® was a game-changer, and despite others following our lead, it remains the undisputed benchmark in its class five years on. The spirit of innovation continues to drive us as we look to use the same smart thinking for a new breed of efficient, clean, and powerful down-sized diesel engines. – Joe Bakai, Vice President, Product Development, Ford of Europe

Know a good thing when you see it

Eleven European models – Fiesta, EcoSport, B-MAX, Focus, C-MAX, Grand C-MAX, Tourneo and Transit Connect, Tourneo and Transit Courier, and Mondeo – are equipped with the award-winning engine.

One out of five new Ford vehicles sold in Europe includes the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. That number climbs to almost two out of five when talking about the Ford Fiesta.

What’s next?

EcoBoost® technology that utilizes low-friction elements is being incorporated into the 2.0-litre EcoBlue engine, the latest down-sized diesel engine from Ford, to provide a 13 percent increase in fuel efficiency and up to 20 percent more low-end torque.*

* The declared Fuel/Energy Consumptions, CO2 emissions and electric range are measured according to the technical requirements and specifications of the European Regulations (EC) 715/2007 and (EC) 692/2008 as last amended. Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are specified for a vehicle variant and not for a single car. The applied standard test procedure enables comparison between different vehicle types and different manufacturers. In addition to the fuel efficiency of a car, driving behaviour as well as other non-technical factors play a role in determining a car's fuel/energy consumption, CO2 emissions and electric range. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas responsible for global warming.
