Overview

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner is a true, time-tested SUV that has always felt more at home on the trails than on pavement. For more than 30 years, the 4Runner has demonstrated its off-road prowess. Toyota's tradition of clever, tough engineering that tackles all terrains continues with the 2020 4Runner. With more car-based crossovers on the roads than ever, the 4Runner remains a stand out as a genuinely rugged mid-sized SUV.

While adequate for making a daily commute, the 4Runner is best known for its highly durable body-on-frame construction, high ground clearance, advanced utility features, as well as its instantly recognizable, bold exterior styling.

The 2020 Toyota 4Runner’s ample and comfortable interior holds either five or as many as seven passengers and features front and rear 12V power outlets. When you need to haul fewer passengers, fold the second-row seats flat to maximize the 88.8 cubic feet of cargo space and accommodate all of the gear you need for your next adventure. The standard infotainment system boasts an 8-inch touchscreen, eight speakers, a USB port, and satellite radio.

Toyota offers the 2020 4Runner with eight different trim levels from the base SR5 to the TRD Pro. For those who want all of the creature comforts, the 4Runner Limited includes 20-inch wheels, a sunroof, leather upholstery, heated seats, and more premium upgrades.

The Perfect Ride for…

Anyone on the hunt for ruggedness, ground clearance, and off-road versatility (features often only found in trucks), but who also values the ability to fit easily into a parking spot while making a grocery run. The 4Runner is meant for practical drivers who love to get mud on their tires.

Drive & Handling

The 2020 4Runner reflects Toyota’s unwavering commitment to allowing drivers to “go places.” The 4Runner is more nimble at tackling uneven, muddy, or rocky terrain than it is cornering at high speeds, but provides adequate handling overall.

All available 4Runners feature the same 4.0-liter V6 engine (270 horsepower, 278 pound-feet of torque), five-speed automatic transmission, and 5,000-pound towing capacity. The 4Runner achieves an EPA-rated 17 mpg in the city and 20 mpg highway.* With rear-wheel drive or part-time 4WD with Active Traction Control (A-TRAC), and an electronically controlled rear differential available on the TRD Off-Road, the 4Runner is primed for the toughest challenges.

Key Features

Advanced Off-Road Performance

Available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) enables each wheel to respond separately to the terrain and available Crawl Control (CRAWL) aids the driver in reaching an optimal combination of traction and low speed. Thanks to Hill Start Assist (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC), the 4Runner is capable of assisting the driver with braking on rough or unusual grades.

Star Safety System

Toyota has equipped the 4Runner with a variety of active and passive safety features, including eight airbags, an integrated backup camera, and tire pressure monitoring system. Additionally, the 4Runner includes driver and front passenger active headrests, which both optimize headrest position to help reduce neck injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.

Alternative Options

If you don’t plan to blaze backwoods trails on a regular basis, the advanced utility features of the 4Runner might not be an ideal fit for you. If you need to move crew and gear, consider a more road-friendly vehicle, such as the Toyota Sienna. The Toyota Tacoma mid-sized truck is another option you may consider if you love all of the utility of the 4Runner but need room for more cargo.
