Overview

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 celebrates the automaker’s "KODO: Soul of Motion” design philosophy, conveying a sense of strength and energy with its athletic stance, elongated hood, and tapered roofline. The image of this model conveys a sense of impending movement, even when idling at a stop light. Inside, up to seven passengers can sit comfortably in the Mazda CX-9’s three rows of seating, enjoying separate automatic climate control for each row. Both rows fold down for larger cargo, and a rear cargo area with storage boxes combines with under floor storage to answer any storage need.

For those that wish to upgrade to it, the premium Signature package includes luxurious Auburn Nappa leather seating and trim and genuine rosewood inlays. Under the hood, you'll find that the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine makes intelligent use of power from only four cylinders, producing 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, all while consuming a cost-saving EPA-estimated 22 mpg city and 28 mpg highway for the front-wheel-drive version and an EPA-estimated 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway for the all-wheel-drive version.*

The Perfect Ride for…

Anyone who wants versatility, agility, and dependability. The Mazda CX-9 is a crossover, a vehicle that combines the best qualities of a spacious SUV and a comfortable sedan to meet the needs of any driver. The list of advanced technology throughout the drivetrain means this model anticipates instead of just reacts, and it all comes from a name that has built its reputation on designing cars with drivers in mind: Mazda.

Drive & Handling

The 2019 Mazda CX-9 showcases the automaker's commitment to engineering with a human-centric development philosophy. The stock 227 horsepower 4-cylinder engine may seem ill-equipped to power a seven-seater crossover, but when paired with the latest driving and handling technology, the Mazda CX-9 consistently surprises.

Mazda developed SKYACTIVE-VEHICLE DYNAMICS with G-Vectoring Control to optimize load control and let the driver steer more precisely, just like athletes refine their form to hit a ball further with less force. Instead of using a heavier engine, Mazda refined the way the engine delivers power to all four wheels, resulting in more efficiency with the same light curb weight. The result is a harmonious driving experience that makes the driver one with the vehicle, following the ancient Japanese philosophy of Jinba Ittaior: “horse and rider as one.” And starting at $32,280 for the Sport trim,** getting into the crossover market is easier than ever.

Key Features

Available i-ACTIV AWD®

The available i-ACTIV AWD® (standard in the Signature trim) continuously calculates an array of factors from the driver and the environment simultaneously, including outside temperature, throttle input, and braking patterns. It analyzes changes in the driver’s steering effort and the tires’ traction in any weather to stabilize and improve overall road grip, all of which translates into more confidence on the road, so you can enjoy the ride.

MAZDA CONNECT™ Infotainment System

Thanks to the available MAZDA CONNECT™ infotainment system, you can access a wealth of amenities with the swipe of your finger. With MAZDA CONNECT™, you can take advantage of navigation assistance with real-time traffic and weather updates. In addition, MAZDA CONNECT™ provides live roadside assistance, vehicle diagnostics, and important service updates. Finally, you can easily enjoy content on your smartphone or tablet using the standard Bluetooth® or USB connections, or sync your device to stream more than 30 million songs available on Pandora®, Spotify, Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto®, or any other streaming service.

Intelligent Safety Features

All trims come standard with features to help you drive more intelligently and more efficiently. Hill Launch Assist helps the driver accelerate from a stop while on a slope. Smart Brake Support utilizes a windshield-mounted laser to detect incoming obstacles in the road and not only warns the driver but also reduces engine output. Mazda Radar Cruise Control uses a millimeter wave radar to judge the relative speed and distance to the car ahead and automatically controls vehicle speed.

Alternative Options

If the three rows of seating in the Mazda CX-9 are more than you need, the shorter Mazda CX-3 offers a more compact design. A crossover itself, the lighter five-seater sports a more fuel-efficient engine with the same smart driving technology. On the other hand, if speed is what you’re looking for, then the quick and nimble Mazda Miata has what you need. The Miata receives a refresh for 2019 and continues a long history as the best-selling roadster of all time.
